Prof. Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam was born in the village of Mohammadpur under Chandanaish Upazilla, Chittagong in 1960. His father Late Monir Ahmed was a Freedom Fighter and mother Late Rashida Begum was a Home-Maker. Prof. Jahangir Alam married Roksana Mannan Lipi and is having one daughter and one son. Prof. Jahangir did his SSC from Gasbaria NG High School in 1976 and HSC from Chittagong Govt. College in the year of 1978. He did his BSc Engineering in Civil Engineering from the then Chittagong Engineering College (presently CUET) under the University of Chittagong. Prof. Dr. Engr. Md. Jahangir Alam obtained his M. Engineering in Structural Engineering in 1991 & Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1994 under the UNESCO Fellowship. Dr. Alam did Advanced Studies on Finite Element at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand under AIT Fellowship. Dr. Alam completed Post Graduate Studies on Earthquake Engineering from University of St. Methodius in Macedonia under The Netherlands Fellowship. Dr. Alam served as the Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) for 4 years from 2012 to 2016 and also served as the Vice Chancellor of University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) for 4 years from 2019 to 2023 by the order of the honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. Dr. Alam served as the Chairman, Joint Coordination Committee (JCC), SATREPS-TSUIB-a Joint Project of JICA, Japan and Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI), Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Bangladesh. Dr Alam has been serving as the member of the Technical Committee for the Bangabandhu Iconic Tri-Tower being implemented by the RAJUK at Purbachal, Dhaka. At present, Prof. Alam is a Professor of Civil Engineering at CUET and also has been serving as the Chairman of CWASA Board. He has 37 years of teaching and professional experiences in Civil and Earthquake Engineering. Dr. Alam has published more than 70 journal and conference articles on Civil and Earthquake Engineering. Dr. Alam is a Life Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), USA. He is also the member of the New York Academy of Sciences, USA. Dr. Alam was the Senate Member of Bangabhundu SMR Maritime University (BSMRMU) and at present serving as the member of Planning & Development Committee and Syndicate Member of Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET). Dr. Alam was listed in WHO’s WHO in the World of Professionals in the year of 2001 in USA and also listed in OUTSTANDING PEOPLE OF THE 21ST CENTURY and OUTSTANDING SCIENTIST IN THE 21ST CENTURY, 2001 in UK. Dr. Alam was awarded as 2018 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, USA and Dr. Alam’ Biography was listed in WHO’s WHO in the World 2018 & 2019, USA. Dr. Alam was awarded UNESCO Educational Achievement Award for Bangladesh and Environment Award in 2013. Dr. Alam served as the Academic Partner and Professor for German DAAD funded project South East Asian Network for Disaster and Environmental Engineering (SEAN-DEE) for 8 years at Kassel University, Germany and the Netherlands funded NICHE project on Capacity Development of Water Resources Engineering at UNESCO-IHE, the Netherlands for 4 years to CUET, Bangladesh. Dr. Alam published a book on “Earthquake Resistant Non-Engineered Building Construction: Seismic Risk Reduction: Physical Vulnerability and Structural Mitigation”, LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing, Berlin, Germany, 2017. Dr. Alam has been involved with research on the implementation of Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Machine Learning, Image Processing and IoT in the field of Civil & Earthquake Engineering, computer aided drug discovery, plant medicine for cancer, digital agriculture, IoT-based environment protection and telemedicine for the rural and tribal people of Bangladesh. On 13 August, 2023 the honorable President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh appointed Prof Dr Jahangir Alam as the Vice Chancellor of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) for 4 years.
